On January 13, 2020, Oak Ridge City Council unanimously approved (7-0) a Resolution endorsing the Vision for the Wilson Street Corridor, known as “Downtown Oak Ridge,” as a guideline for the City. The action also gave the City Manager consent to create an advisory task force of citizens to plan and execute special projects that promote the vision.
Several people spoke at the City Council meeting in strong support of the resolution and downtown vision, including representatives of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge Housing Authority and Development Corporation, and local businesses and community organizations.
Study and design to support a new downtown was made possible through a planning grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), which culminated in an intensive 3-day workshop involving stakeholders, property owners, and a group of design and transportation consultants in October 2019.
